Blue Cross donates online campaign proceeds to health care group

From the Friday, July 20, 2007, Giving Back column of New Mexico Business Weekly

Albuquerque Health Care for the Homeless received a $5,892 check from Blue Cross and Blue Shield of New Mexico on July 11. The Homeless organization's Co-Executive Director Jennifer Metzler said the money would allow the group to fulfill its commitment to work with others "across the health care spectrum, to ensure access to services that will end homelessness for our neighbors. These dollars support critical programs such as medical and dental care, social and behavioral health services, outreach and housing, for men, women and children who find themselves without a roof or a place of their own."

Blue Cross donated the funds as part of an online campaign of the Shield the Children program offered through its parent, Health Care Service Corp. Shield the Children encourages the health care insurer's members to log on to the plan's Web site and select to receive their benefit notices via e-mail rather than by mail. For each subscriber who chose that option, the company donated $1 to its Shield the Children program. Local Blue Cross officials then picked Albuquerque Health Care for the Homeless as the beneficiary of the Internet sign-up campaign.

AHCH was founded in 1985 and serves more than 7,500 individuals on an annual basis. Visit www.abqhch.org* for more information.
