Since 1940, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of New Mexico (BCBSNM) has been committed to the health needs of our state, adapting to changes in the health care environment and developing new and innovative products to administer a variety of private business and government benefit programs.
BCBSNM offers a complete continuum of health plans, including HMO, PPO, indemnity, and individual health plans. We serve over 270,000 individuals, employees, and family members, with the most comprehensive provider networks in the state.
Stability and Experience
In addition to offering a wide range of commercial products, BCBSNM serves as the fiscal intermediary for Contract Health Services (CHS), provided through Indian Health Service (IHS); administers the State of New Mexico Medical Insurance Pool (NMMIP) for uninsured individuals; and provides utilization review for the New Mexico Medicaid Program.
In July 2001, BCBSNM was acquired by Health Care Service Corporation, a Mutual Legal Reserve Company and Independent Licensee of the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association. HCSC also operates the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Plans of Illinois, Texas, and Oklahoma. This acquisition provides BCBSNM with access to new technologies and capabilities.
HCSC operates through its Blue Cross and Blue Shield divisions in New Mexico, Texas, Illinois, Oklahoma, and several subsidiaries to offer a variety of health and life insurance products and related services to employers and individuals. HCSC serves more than 12 million members.

National and International Health Care Access
The unique BlueCard® Program helps BCBSNM members access physicians, hospitals, and health care services across the nation and in more than 200 countries around the world. More than 90 percent of all hospitals and 80 percent of physicians in the United States contract with Blue Cross and Blue Shield (BCBS) Plans.
For HMO members who are away from home for at least 90 days, the Away From Home Care® Program provides nationwide access to managed care providers at a participating Blue Cross and Blue Shield HMO.
The Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association
We are a member of this national trade association of independent Blue Cross and Blue Shield Plans that together provide health care financing for over 99 million Americans — that's nearly one-third of all Americans covered by a Blues Plan.
