Blue Cross and Blue Shield of New Mexico Marks 20 Years of Providing School Supplies to New Mexico Students

August 13, 2010

Albuquerque, New Mexico — This year marks the 20th anniversary for Blue Cross and Blue Shield of New Mexico (BCBSNM) employees’ Operation Back to School (OBTS) campaign. For two decades BCBSNM employees have generously donated time and money to provide school supplies for students in need. Over 30 school districts and an additional 25 individual schools have benefited from OBTS. BCBSNM employees, on their own time, will deliver this year’s donations to nine schools and districts around New Mexico over the next week. For some deliveries Blue Bear, the BCBSNM mascot, will join the caravan of cars and trucks to deliver school supplies.

OBTS began on a small scale in 1990 as a project to support the New Mexico Public Schools Insurance Authority. To celebrate the 20th anniversary of this campaign, BCBSNM employees and Blue Bear will deliver supplies to Emerson Elementary in Albuquerque as they did the first year of the program. Additional beneficiaries this year include Carrizozo Municipal Schools, Lake Arthur Municipal Schools, Loving Municipal Schools, Truth or Consequences Municipal Schools, Española Public Schools, and Questa Independent Schools.

“The importance of education is evident in today’s economy and is fundamental to a healthy community. As needs have continued to increase, so has the passion of our employees,” says BCBSNM President Liz Watrin. “For 20 years, our employees have given generously to enrich the educational opportunities and close the gaps of achievement by providing basic school supplies. Our goal is to help young New Mexicans and their families achieve their highest potential.”
