Care Van Program, Traveling to Help Improve Health and Wellness

January 1, 2012

Blue Cross and Blue Shield of New Mexico (BCBSNM) is committed to making New Mexico communities a better place to live, work, and raise families. One of the ways the company impacts the health and wellness of New Mexicans is through the Care Van program — a community partnership service that helps improve health outcomes for all New Mexicans. By providing needed medical services such as immunizations and health screenings, BCBSNM is helping to reduce health care costs for all New Mexicans for the long term. Last year, almost 3,000 immunizations and more than 3,500 health screenings were provided at Care Van clinics around the state.

Earlier this year, the company debuted its new 30-foot, leased van, which is used for basic checkups, immunizations and flu shots, dental screenings, and medical service outreach. The van has three service areas and is equipped with a computer that allows Department of Health nurses to access and update the state's immunizations records. The bright graphics on the van make it visible at any event.

"The Care Van has been a successful grassroots effort to meet the needs of at-risk families around the state," said Chris Johnston, Care Van Coordinator for BCBSNM. "Our old van traveled more than 140,000 miles in five years to provide services to the rural communities of New Mexico. I am happy to continue these services with our new van."

The van can be booked for health fairs, community events, and immunization clinics. Monthly, the Care Van delivers immunization clinics with various health care partners. The Care Van hosts a free immunization clinic in Hobbs the third Friday of each month, at McDonald's, 1709 North Turner Street, in collaboration with Department of Health nurses.
