Blue Cross and Blue Shield of New Mexico Awards Grant for RMYC After-school Care

January 19, 2012

Blue Cross and Blue Shield of New Mexico has awarded a grant to Rocky Mountain Youth Corps to assist with after-school activities in the community.

On January 13, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of New Mexico representatives presented the award to Vivian Martinez, RMYC education program coordinator.

The award will be used to promote physical activities, encourage health education and promote safe after-school environments. RMYC's education crews work throughout the school year providing after-school homework assistance, physical activity and enrichment to nearly 120 Taos elementary school children.

Rocky Mountain Youth Corps is a nonprofit organization formed in 1995. Modeled after Civilian Conservation Corps of the 1930s, corps members discover their value within the community by completing projects such as building parks and walking trails, restoring forest habitat, enhancing community facilities.

In 2011, the organization provided over $515,000 in corps member stipends and benefits and distributed AmeriCorps Educational scholarships valued at $160,685.

BlueCross BlueShield of New Mexico is the largest commercial membership health insurer in the state with 303,000 members and serving another 63,000 New Mexicans through the nationwide BlueCard Program.
