Blue Cross and Blue Shield of New Mexico Launches Be Covered New Mexico Campaign to Raise Awareness of Individual Health Insurance Enrollment Options

May 17, 2013

Albuquerque, NM — Blue Cross and Blue Shield of New Mexico (BCBSNM) launched a statewide education and outreach initiative today, targeting New Mexico's uninsured residents. The "Be Covered New Mexico" campaign, which will be fully funded by BCBSNM and supported by various community and civic groups, will focus on helping the state's uninsured population understand how the new health care law impacts them and what steps they need to take to gain access to individual health insurance. The enrollment period for uninsured New Mexicans opens in October, with health care coverage beginning in January 2014.

The "Be Covered New Mexico" campaign will collaborate with established community groups, civic organizations, schools, religious institutions, and doctors to offer educational materials and guidance in both English and Spanish. The campaign includes a website , which will contain information about insurance coverage, benefits plan options, and important requirements of the new federal health care law. As the deadline for purchasing individual insurance approaches, the website will help guide New Mexicans through the enrollment process.

"As a customer-owned organization, BCBSNM has been a leader in helping bring affordable, high-quality coverage to as many people as possible. Our mission is to expand access to health care in New Mexico, and to educate uninsured consumers about their coverage choices," said Kurt Shipley, president of Blue Cross and Blue Shield of New Mexico. "As part of 'Be Covered New Mexico,' we are looking forward to sharing information with our community partners and reaching out to new partners as we seek to help guide uninsured New Mexicans through the upcoming changes."

Current partners in the campaign include ABQ Health Partners, Education for Parents of Indian Children with Special Needs (EPICS), NM Appleseed, and the New Mexico Alliance for School-Based Health Care. Each partnering organization will also have access to educational materials and guidance in both English and Spanish. The "Be Covered New Mexico" campaign will collaborate with the organizations to distribute information and raise awareness at their events. Partners serve a wide variety of communities and citizens, but are unified in the desire to share information about the upcoming health insurance marketplace and how individuals and families can best navigate the changes this fall.

The health care exchange will be an online marketplace for consumers to shop and compare health insurance plans based on price, benefits, services, and quality. BCBSNM plans to offer coverage through the exchange, in addition to its current portfolio of policy offerings.
