Blue Cross and Blue Shield of New Mexico Partners with First Choice for Diabetes Intervention Pilot Program

Aug. 02, 2013

Blue Cross and Blue Shield of New Mexico (BCBSNM) has formed a partnership with First Choice Community Healthcare for a type 2 diabetes prevention lifestyle intervention pilot program. Brian M. Shelley MD, Wellness Director of First Choice, will serve as the program's physician coordinator, and Roxanne Seiler LPN will serve as the clinical coordinator. The pilot classes will be conducted at the First Choice South Valley Family Health Commons. The program will include 16 weeks of lifestyle intervention sessions for patients at risk for diabetes. After the initial sessions, participants will be encouraged to attend monthly follow-up classes to reaffirm lifestyle changes and practices. First Choice will monitor participants through self-reported activity and measured weight changes. Participants will receive access to First Choice fitness facilities. Participant data will be collected and filed with the Centers for Disease Control Diabetes Prevention Recognition Program.

"What is exciting about this program is that we have a chance to implement an evidence-based diabetes prevention program in our community," said Dr. Shelley. "Diabetes is a preventable disease."

"BCBSNM is happy to work with First Choice to implement this pilot program," stated Dr. Eugene Sun, Chief Medical Officer, BCBSNM. "The cost of diabetes in New Mexico is more than $1 billion annually and the effect on patients' lives can be catastrophic. Through this pilot program, we can help New Mexicans avoid developing diabetes in the first place."

As part of the two-year pilot program, First Choice and BCBSNM will be registered with the Centers for Disease Control Diabetes Prevention Recognition Program. The recognition program provides accurate, reliable, and trustworthy information to participants via group classes and support.
