BlueSalud is a health insurance plan that is part of New Mexico’s Salud! Medicaid program. We are pleased to provide this health plan for individuals and families who qualify under Medicaid. If you qualify for health care under Medicaid, you can choose Blue Cross and Blue Shield of New Mexico (BCBSNM), a name you can trust.

To apply for BlueSalud, follow these steps:
- Visit the New Mexico Department of Human Services website and Apply for Assistance*

BCBSNM Drug List
BCBSNM goes by a list of approved drugs. The list is called a "drug formulary" or "drug list." The list is created by a group of providers and pharmacists. BCBSNM will pay for medicines on this list.
Certain drugs on the list need prior authorization. Your doctor will need to send BCBSNM a request before these drugs can be prescribed. If your doctor wants you to have a drug that is not on the list, he or she can send a request for approval to BCBSNM.
Pharmacies
BCBSNM contracts with most pharmacies. You must get your drugs at a contracted pharmacy. Locate one of these pharmacies using the link below. You can also call Customer Service at 1-866-689-1523 to find a pharmacy close to you.

Getting to Your Appointment
BCBSNM contracts with LogistiCare® for transportation services.* This includes rides to and from your doctor's office or a health care facility. You must be receiving covered services. LogistiCare will make sure your medical needs are approved before arranging the ride.
Trips must be medically necessary. Examples include rides to:
- Doctor appointments
- Counseling
- Dialysis
You can only use this service for medical needs. Rides to go shopping or to visit a friend are not covered.
Transportation is for BlueSalud members who have no other way to get to a doctor. This means you cannot walk, use mass transit, or drive yourself. If you can take yourself to the doctor, you must do so.

BlueSalud includes dental care for eligible members. Dental care is administered through DentaQuest.* It is important to use these benefits to keep your teeth healthy. Find helpful tips for healthy teeth on DentaQuest's website**

Finding a Dentist
If you need to find a dentist in your area, call Customer Service. If you have special needs, Customer Service can help you. Examples:
- Need to know handicap accessible offices
- Need to know languages spoken by a dentist

Dental Emergency
Most dental problems are not "emergencies." An emergency means the dental problem is life-threatening. Examples of a dental emergency:
- Broken tooth
- Knocked-out tooth
- Toothache with swelling (possible infection)
If you have a dental emergency, call your dentist.
Urgent Dental Care
An urgent dental problem is when you need to be seen the same day, but it isn't serious enough to go the ER. You should be seen within 24 hours for urgent dental care. If you cannot find a dentist to see you within 24 hours, call Customer Service.
Non-Urgent Dental Care
A non-urgent dental problem is when you have symptoms but don't need to see a dentist the same day. Non-urgent dental problems should be seen within 14 days.
Routine Dental Care
Routine care is a regular dental check-up. Or it's a dental condition that is not causing problems or pain. You should be seen within 60 days of your request for routine care. If your dentist cannot see you within 60 days, call Customer Service.
What services are covered?
Many dental services are covered when you see an in-network provider:
- Preventive dental care – oral exams, cleanings, x-rays
- Restorative dental care – fillings, crowns, tooth extractions
- Periodontia – services to help you maintain healthy gums
- Orthodontia – braces for eligible members under 21 years old
Dental benefits can vary depending on your age. See the Member Handbook for a list of covered services.
What services are not covered?
BlueSalud does not cover certain dental services such as cosmetic dentistry, tooth bleaching, and implants. See the Member Handbook for a list of non-covered services.
Prior Authorization for Dental
Some dental care requires prior approval. You must have approval before getting treatment. Call for approval before your appointment. For more information, check the Member Handbook.

When you see an in-network provider, covered services include:
- Eye exams
- Eyeglasses
- Replacement lenses
- Aids to manage double vision
- Minor repairs to eyeglasses

What is not covered?
BlueSalud does not cover:
- Contact lens insurance
- Low vision aids
- Laser vision correction

A few services require WDI or CHIP members to pay a copayment. A copayment is a fixed dollar amount members must pay for a service at the time they receive care. For more information, see the Summary of Benefits

Services are covered at 100 percent. You do not have to meet a deductible. You do not have to fill out claim forms when you see a participating provider.
