New Mexico Medical Insurance Pool (NMMIP)

The New Mexico Medical Insurance Pool (NMMIP) was created by the New Mexico state legislature in 1987. Blue Cross and Blue Shield of New Mexico (BCBSNM) has been the administrator of the NMMIP program since 1988. Two types of coverage are available – a new Federal High Risk Pool and a state High Risk Pool.

Federal High Risk Pool (FHRP)

Beginning on July 1, 2010, New Mexico residents with pre-existing medical conditions who have been without health insurance for at least six months may now qualify for the new Federal High Risk Pool (FHRP). The New Mexico FHRP is part of the temporary Federal program created by the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (P.L. 111-148). BCBSNM is the administrator of this new pool program in New Mexico.
