ANSI v5010: Second Discretion Period

March 20, 2012

Blue Cross and Blue Shield of New Mexico (BCBSNM) will continue “dual processing” into the second Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) 90-day enforcement discretion period. The ANSI v5010-only cutover date is yet to be determined.

On March 15, 2012, CMS announced a second 90-day extension period of enforcement discretion for the implementation of ANSI v5010. The original date for ANSI v5010 implementation was scheduled for January 1, 2012. The new 90-day enforcement discretion period extends through June 30, 2012.

To assist those providers who are still in the process of converting or have not yet begun, BCBSNM will continue to process both v4010 and v5010 transactions into this second enforcement discretion period. The transition date to ANSI v5010-only transactions will be determined at a time to be announced.

We strongly urge all providers to continue working with their trading partners and vendors to ensure they have a plan in place to process ANSI v5010 transactions within the new 90-day enforcement discretion period. Email questions regarding this issue.
