Making an Impact Annual Highlights

Working with a network of nonprofit organizations with deep roots in our communities is one of the most important ways Blue Cross and Blue Shield of New Mexico (BCBSNM) can help members achieve their best health. In 2019, we contributed nearly $720,000 to 22 community partners. This includes Healthy Kids, Healthy Families® grants for efforts advancing nutrition and physical activity, supporting safe environments and preventing and managing disease. Through our collaboration with Feeding America, Roadrunner Food Bank of New Mexico reported nearly 130,000 meals distributed across the state. With KaBOOM!, two imagination playgrounds and a multisport court were installed for children to have safe places to play.

Bridging Gaps in Preventive Care

Transportation challenges and other barriers to routine preventive care can have big impacts on the health and well-being of our communities. BCBSNM’s Care Van® program partners with independent health care providers to expand access to preventive care with mobile health clinics across the state, including in rural areas. In 2019, the program delivered immunizations, diabetes screenings, dental and vision exams and other services to more than 15,000 New Mexicans.

Every year, thousands of BCBSNM employees dedicate time and energy to make a difference in our communities. In 2019, nearly 400 employees volunteered more than 11,000 hours of their time. Thanks to them, many nonprofit organizations earned matching donations from employees logging their time in our Blue CorpsSM program. Employees also contributed more than $40,000 to United Way and the Blue Bear Employee Relief Fund.

Caring for Our Environment

As a health insurer, we know the environment plays a part in the health and well-being of our members and communities. We’re committed to sustainable practices like recycling, waste reduction, renewable energy use, and responsible food sourcing. In 2019, we recycled nearly 345,000 pounds of paper, saving nearly 3,000 trees, more than 500 cubic yards of landfill space, 1.2 million gallons of water and 65,000 gallons of oil. BCBSNM also participates in the CDP — which helps companies, cities, states and regions manage their environmental impact.
