Blue Cross and Blue Shield of New Mexico's 2017 Social Responsibility Report Demonstrates Commitment to Members and Communities

Blue Cross and Blue Shield of New Mexico’s (BCBSNM) 2017 Social Responsibility Report highlights the work of BCBSNM employees who make a positive impact in the lives of members and their communities and who maintain a strong, caring, inclusive and ethical culture of excellence.

“Every day, our employees live our purpose to help improve the health and wellness of our members and our fellow New Mexicans,” said Janice Torrez, divisional vice president of external affairs and chief of staff, BCBSNM. “Our values extend beyond our jobs through our volunteerism and support of community-based organizations that assist some of the most vulnerable populations across our state. Our employees generously volunteer their personal time, preparing boxes of food for low-income seniors, delivering meals to people experiencing homelessness, and raising funds for the American Cancer Society, to name a few of their efforts.”

In 2017, employees continued to generously give their time and talent by volunteering more than 11,000 hours. Employees participated in activities such as working in mobile food pantries for people experiencing hunger, collecting school supplies for at-risk students and purchasing holiday presents for families in need.

BCBSNM’s ability to make a positive impact is driven by employees’ dedication to serve. Commemorating the 10-year anniversary of Blue CorpsSM, the employee volunteer program, BCBSNM aspires to double its employee volunteer efforts by 2021.

Another key vehicle for outreach is BCBSNM’s Healthy Kids, Healthy Families® initiative, which aims to help improve the health and well-being of children and families through a variety of local nonprofit collaborations. In 2017, BCBSNM gave more than $345,000 to organizations working to improve the lives of New Mexicans in the areas of improving nutrition, increasing physical activity, managing chronic diseases and creating safe environments.
