Cuidando Los Niños Receives Grant to Support Health and Nutrition for Children Experiencing Homelessness

Cuidando los Niños has received a $13,675 grant from Blue Cross and Blue Shield of New Mexico (BCBSNM) through its Healthy Kids, Healthy Families® (HKHF) initiative. Cuidando los Niños’ commitment to breaking the cycle of homelessness and instilling healthy habits and behaviors aligns with the vision of BCBSNM’s Healthy Kids, Healthy Families grant program to help improve the health of children and their families in local communities.

In the wake of COVID-19, Cuidando los Niños is helping its community by using the HKHF grant funds for transportation, education, housing and overall assistance for children experiencing or emerging from homelessness. Cuidando los Niños’ housing program has continued to serve their families throughout the pandemic, and the preschool and early childhood education programs have resumed operations.

“Cuidando los Niños is honored to partner with BCBSNM to lift families out of homelessness and instill healthy exercise and nutrition habits as part of the journey to self-sufficiency,” said Jeffrey Hoehn, Cuidando los Niños executive director.

“We’re proud to give our support to Cuidando los Niños,” said Janice Torrez, vice president of external affairs, BCBSNM. “They do great work to positively impact children’s health by creating a culture of support, education and opportunities for children and their parents, all with the hope of ending the generational cycle of homelessness.”

Healthy Kids, Healthy Families is a signature program of BCBSNM. The initiative focuses on engaging children and their families in understanding the importance of nutritious food, raising the level of physical activity, better managing chronic conditions and promoting safe environments. Likewise, Cuidando los Niños’ works to support families in a journey to a healthy lifestyle as they emerge from homelessness.
