Wellness and Connection: Seniors Gather for Health & Fitness Day

Blue Cross and Blue Shield of New Mexico and the city of Albuquerque collaborated to bring more than 300 enthusiastic participants to the fourth annual Senior Health & Fitness Day, a national event held in May to promote health and wellness among adults at least 50 years old.

Attendees engaged in low-impact exercise classes, including Zumba, Tai Chi, yoga and hula led by instructors who encouraged participants to discover enjoyable ways to stay active.

They also explored a mini health fair, including cardiovascular and medication assessments, fall prevention activities and wellness information. The BCBSNM Care Van offered no-cost screenings for blood pressure, pulse and pulse oxygen administered by Vdex Diabetes.

“Participating in activities that promote fitness is essential for not just our physical health, but our mental and social well-being as well,” says Dr. Latha Raja Shankar, BCBSNM's chief medical officer and vice president of health care delivery. She welcomed event participants.

The atmosphere fostered a sense of camaraderie among attendees. Many participants reconnected with friends and met new people while engaging in activities.

“We’re proud to collaborate with the city of Albuquerque to help create a supportive environment where older adults can come together to enhance their health and enjoy the benefits of an active lifestyle,” Shankar says.
