Blue Cross and Blue Shield of New Mexico Celebrates 85 Years of Service

ALBUQUERQUE — This year marks a significant milestone for Blue Cross and Blue Shield of New Mexico as it celebrates its 85th anniversary. For over eight decades, BCBSNM has been dedicated to enhancing the health and well-being of New Mexicans with programs and services that have positively impacted communities across the state, including:

  • Care Van® Mobile Health Clinic — collaborating with community organizations and health care providers to offer no-cost health screenings, vaccinations and educational resources to underserved areas, particularly rural communities. In 2024, the Care Vans traveled nearly 40,000 miles, reaching over 16,000 individuals across 53 towns.
  • Blue Door Neighborhood CenterSM — a hub for health and wellness solutions offering no-cost resources and programming to support chronic health conditions, maternal and infant health and behavioral health.
  • Blue ImpactSM grant program — bolstering community wellbeing through substantial community investments. In 2025 alone, BCBSNM awarded over $800,000 to statewide nonprofits, addressing social determinants of health in New Mexico communities.
  • Special Beginnings® maternal and infant health initiative — investing additional support and resources to improve maternal and infant health in New Mexico. Collaborations with community and clinical organizations are focused on helping women and families through pregnancy planning, childbirth and beyond.

BCBSNM traces its roots to 1940 when Hospital Service, Inc., became New Mexico Blue Cross and Surgical Services, Inc., became New Mexico Blue Shield. The two companies eventually merged in the 70s to become Blue Cross and Blue Shield of New Mexico.

Today, it stands as one of the largest providers of health benefits in the state, serving over 700,000 members through various coverage options, including employer group plans, individual and family market plans, as well as Medicare and Medicaid. In 2023 alone, BCBSNM contributed more than $470 million to the state’s economy.

As BCBSNM looks to the future, it remains devoted to enhancing health outcomes through innovative programs and community partnerships.
