Frequently Asked Questions

NMRHCA Medicare Supplement Plan

  • Can I purchase the BCBSNM Medicare Supplement Plan in place of Medicare?
Medicare Supplement plans doesn't replace Medicare coverage. Medicare Supplement is designed to help cover the "gaps" in coverage that original Medicare Part A and Part B does not pay. You must be eligible for Medicare and enrolled in Medicare Parts A and B to purchase the BCBSNM Medicare Supplement Plan. This helps to ensure you receive the highest level of benefits from the Medicare Supplement Plan. For more information, please call the New Mexico Retiree Health Care Authority at 1-800-233-2576.
  • Do I need to have a Primary Care Provider (PCP) and referrals to see a specialist?
This Medicare Supplement Plan does not require you to select a PCP or require referrals. However, it is wise to establish a relationship with a doctor so he/she knows your medical history.
  • Do I need to go to a certain laboratory to have my lab work done?
You may go to any Medicare-contracted lab.
  • Will I have coverage when traveling outside of the United States?
You pay the first $250 each calendar year for medically necessary emergency care services received while temporarily outside the Medicare territorial limits. After you pay that amount, the Medicare Supplement Plan covers 80 percent of the remaining charges up to the BCBSNM lifetime maximum allowable fee ($50,000).
  • Do I have prescription drug coverage?

Your prescription coverage is provided by a third-party pharmacy benefits manager. Contact your company’s pharmacy benefits manager for more information.
