COVID-19 Preparedness in New Mexico

March 11, 2020

We are closely monitoring activity around the 2019 novel coronavirus (COVID-19). While there only three confirmed cases of COVID-19 in New Mexico as of this date, it is essential that healthcare providers familiarize themselves with the health recommendations and protocols provided by the New Mexico Department of Health Learn more about third-party links (NMDOH) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Learn more about third-party links (CDC).

If you suspect one of your patients is experiencing symptoms consistent with COVID-19 please have the patient call NMDOH at 505-827-0006 immediately.

In addition to being eligible to see a health care provider in person, some Blue Cross and Blue Shield of New Mexico (BCBSNM) members may be eligible for telehealth services. Telehealth services may be a good option when possible to minimize the potential exposure of providers, staff and other patients. More information about telehealth services is available on our website under the Standards and Requirements tab.

Effective immediately for members BCBSNM insures, for testing to diagnose COVID-19 when medically necessary and consistent with CDC guidance:

  • No prior authorization needed
  • No member copays or deductibles

Many of our members are covered under a health plan that is self-insured by their employer. We are helping employers in making decisions about their health plans.

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) has developed an Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System (HCPCS) code, U0002 Learn more about third-party links, for the testing of COVID-19 with non-CDC laboratory tests.
