MATERNITY PROGRAM
Maternal and Infant Health Programs and Services
Blue Cross and Blue Shield of New Mexico offers resources to help keep you and your baby healthy. Get the help you need during pregnancy and after your baby is born.
Healthy Mom = Healthy Baby
Being pregnant can be a time filled with new and unexpected experiences. We want to make sure you have the support you need as you go through this special journey. BCBSNM offers a Care Coordination program to help you better understand and manage your pregnancy. We recommend you enroll as early as possible. That way you can take advantage of all the benefits of the program. Check below for more details.
Care Coordination for Pregnant Members
If you have health issues, care coordination can help you manage them. A care coordinator is a health care professional who will be your main point of contact during your pregnancy. They help you learn about your plan benefits. You can also learn about health care services you may need. The care coordinator works with you and your providers to help you get the best care.
Get Help During and After Pregnancy
Your care coordinator can help you with:
- Finding a prenatal care provider.
- Setting up your visits and tests with doctors and other health care team members. They can help you better understand when you should have care during your pregnancy and after your baby is born.
- A referral to the maternal home visit program (learn more below).
- Access to classes and info to help you learn about what to expect and how to make good choices to stay healthy.
- Your health concerns and questions when your provider is not available.
- Non-emergency medical transportation (for example, to your doctor visits).
- Medicaid-covered behavioral health services before and after your baby is born.
- Access to your Value-Added Services, including how to earn member rewards for completing certain healthy actions (for example, get an infant car seat at no cost).
After your baby is born:
- If you have applied and are eligible for Medicaid, your child is covered under your plan for 13 months after their birth.
- If your baby needs care coordination, they will be assigned a care coordinator.
- We can assist you with getting your baby signed up for Medicaid. You will need to provide proof of birth and can choose a Managed Care Organization (MCO) plan for your baby. If you are enrolled in an MCO, your child will be enrolled in the same MCO. Up to three months after the newborn’s birth, the baby’s MCO can be changed if the mother (or legal guardian) requests it.
If you have questions about getting your baby the care they need, call 1-877-232-5518. If you are speech- or hearing-impaired, call 711 for TTY service.
