Turquoise Care for Native Americans

Blue Cross and Blue Shield of New Mexico has been insuring New Mexicans since 1940. We are committed to the well-being of the communities we serve. This includes Native Americans who live on or off tribal lands.

Get the Care You Need

BCBSNM is one of the managed care organizations that offers Medicaid health plans. Our plan is designed to help meet the health care needs of all New Mexicans. If you qualify for the New Mexico Medicaid program, you can choose to enroll in this plan.

Some of the health programs, services and tools we offer include:

Value-Added Services

The plan covers more than just standard Medicaid benefits. We also offer extra services to help keep you and your family healthy. Learn more

Native American Traditional Healing and Wellness Benefit

Native American members can get a grant for services provided by a Traditional Healer. Call 1-877-232-5518 to request the Traditional Medicine Benefit. Members with hearing or speech loss can call the TTY line at 711. Learn more

If you are a member who is pregnant and get timely health care, you can receive a car seat, portable crib or diapers from Finity at no charge. To find out about these member rewards, call 1-877-806-8964. Learn about maternity programs and services.

Care Coordination

If you have health issues, Care Coordination can help you manage them. You can learn about health care you may need. Our case managers may be able to help if you have:

  • Multiple health issues
  • A complex illness
  • A high number of ER visits or hospital stays because your condition is not under control

Members can ask to be assigned to a Native American Care Coordinator for help with their health care needs. Learn more

Long-Term Care and Community Benefit

The plan covers long-term care services. These services help you meet health or personal needs. This type of care can help you stay independent. Learn more

Behavioral Health Services

Behavioral health can affect overall health. We want to help members get quality care for their mind and body. This care is meant to help those with:

  • Emotional needs or concerns
  • Mental health diagnosis
  • Substance abuse concerns

The type of service needed depends on the situation. Our Care Coordinators can help. They can help members find out what is covered. They can also let you know if a service needs to be approved before you get treatment. Learn more

Transportation Services

Non-emergency medical transportation is a benefit of the plan. BCBSNM contracts with ModivcareTM for transportation services. This includes rides to and from a health care facility. These services are for members who have no other way to get to a doctor. Modivcare will make sure your medical needs are approved before the ride is arranged. Learn more

Preventive Screenings

Here are guidelines to help you manage your care. Ask your doctor about what screenings you might need.

School-Based Health Centers

The New Mexico Alliance for School-Based Health Care represents school-based health centers (SBHCs) in New Mexico and in tribal communities. They promote and advocate for health care and health education in the schools. Students can access preventive care at their local SBHC, including well visits and EPSDT* screenings. Preventive health care is available for everyone to stay healthy and prevent illness. You can find a local SBHC near you by visiting nmasbhc.org.

*EPSDT = Early and Periodic Screening, Diagnostic and Treatment

Children in State Custody (CISC)

All members who are considered CISC will be enrolled through Presbyterian Health Plan. Native American members can choose the managed care organization (MCO) they would like to be enrolled in.

If members identified as CISC decide to enroll in BCBSNM, they are required to have a comprehensive well-child checkup within 30 days of coming into state custody.

If you have questions about CISC, you can call us at 1-866-689-1523. You can also learn more about CISC on the New Mexico Health Authority (HCA) website.

Learn more about how this plan works in the Member Handbook.

Native American Advisory Board

The Native American Advisory Board (NAAB) is a team that can advise BCBSNM on issues related to Native Americans. NAAB plays a key role in helping BCBSNM improve the health plan. We want to know your experience with the health plan and the health care you receive. This board can include health plan members and their family. It may also include appointed tribal representatives and providers. Check the schedule for upcoming NAAB meetings.
