Drug Coverage

Preferred Drug List

Your Blue Cross and Blue Shield of New Mexico plan includes prescription drug coverage. This plan goes by a list of approved drugs from the New Mexico Health Care Authority (HCA). The list is called a "preferred drug list" or "drug formulary." BCBSNM will pay for medicines on this list.

The Preferred Drug List includes both brand name and generic drugs. Generics have the same active ingredients as brand name drugs. Generic drugs usually cost less than brand name drugs. Generics are rated by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to be as safe and effective as brand name drugs.

Check our Preferred Drug List below to see if your prescriptions are covered. Certain drugs on the list need approval ("prior authorization"). Your doctor will need to send BCBSNM a request before these drugs can be prescribed. If your doctor wants you to have a drug that is not on the list, he or she can send a request for approval to BCBSNM.

Do you need a printed copy of the Preferred Drug List? Call Member Services at 1-866-689-1523 (TTY/TDD: 711) and we will mail it to you.

Refer to the Preferred Drug List and your Member Handbook for more details about Rx coverage.

Note: BCBSNM does not cover cannabis. Cannabis comes from the cannabis plant. It has delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) as an active ingredient. Cannabis may be called marijuana. BCBSNM does not cover cannabis in any form. This includes:

  • Plant seeds
  • Extracted resin
  • Salt or other derivative
  • Any mixture or preparation of cannabis-derived compounds
