Vision Care
Your Blue Cross and Blue Shield of New Mexico plan includes vision care. These benefits are administered by Davis Vision®. You can get routine vision care, eyeglasses, and eye check-ups.
Please note: If you have the Alternative Benefit Plan (ABP), you have routine vision benefits. If you are an ABP member who is eligible, you can get:
- One eye exam covered every 36 months for members 21 years or older.
- One eye exam covered every 12 months for members under age 21.
Refractions or eyeglasses are not covered under the ABP plan. The plan does cover aphakia after the removal of the lens.
What is Covered?
When you use an in-network provider, covered services include:
- Routine eye exams
- Eyeglasses (frames and/or lenses)
- Replacement lenses
- Aids to manage double vision
- Minor repairs to eyeglasses
Do you have diabetes or another disease that could affect your eyesight? You may be eligible for more than the standard number of eye exams each year.

What is Not Covered?
This plan does not cover:
- Eyeglasses or contact lens insurance
- Low vision aids
- Laser vision correction
- Trifocals
- Anti-scratch, anti-reflective, or mirror coating

Prior Approval for Vision Care
Some vision care requires approval from BCBSNM. This approval is called “prior authorization.” You must receive this approval before treatment. If BCBSNM does not approve the service, the cost will not be covered (paid) by BCBSNM.
